AI Glossary
Key Terms Explained
Understanding the terminology used when discussing artificial intelligence and its impact on work is crucial. Here are definitions for some key terms:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- The theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.
- Machine Learning (ML)
- A subset of AI where systems learn and improve from experience (data) without being explicitly programmed. Algorithms identify patterns in data to make predictions or decisions.
- Automation
- The use of technology to perform tasks previously done by humans.
- Augmentation (AI)
- The use of AI tools to assist humans in performing tasks more effectively or efficiently, rather than replacing the human entirely.
- Natural Language Processing (NLP)
- A field of AI focused on enabling computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language.
- Generative AI
- AI models capable of creating new content, such as text, images, code, or audio, often based on patterns learned from training data (e.g., ChatGPT, DALL-E).
- Automation Risk / AI Impact Score
- An estimate of the degree to which a job’s tasks are susceptible to being automated or significantly changed by AI technologies.
